From the car park by the Giant’s Thumb, the walk will ascend the east end of Mynydd Llangatwg to join Crawshay Bailey’s Darren Disgwylfa tramroad. We will follow the tramroad to see one of the stones on the mountain inscribed with mysterious biblical verses and look down on the Clydach Gorge and learn of its reputed link to William Shakespeare as well as its industrial past. We will then head to the summit of the mountain and hear of its earliest Bronze Age inhabitants, a Dark Ages battle and the Duke of Beaufort’s shooting lodge. The walk returns to its start point via the Lonely Shepherd standing stone, crossing an ancient parish road along the way.
DIRECTIONS TO START
Take the A40 west towards Brecon and at the Shell petrol station turn left and cross the river bridge. Turn left and follow this road into Gilwern. Soon after you enter the village you will see the Corn Exchange inn on your left, turn right and go up the hill to Llanelli Church. Go round the left side of the churchyard, past Church Road, and continue up the hill between the cottages. At the top of the road, bear left and continue one mile. Park on the flat ground on the left opposite the white house (Ty-yn-y-Coed).
