Walk Grading Guide

These descriptions are a guide, but depending on weather and underfoot conditions, walks may be more challenging than their Boot allocation.  Taking part in a walk for which you do not have the required level of fitness and stamina and/or clothing and equipment puts you and the whole group at risk.  Before booking, please read the Terms and Conditions section carefully for further guidance.

  • 4 BOOTS

    4 BOOTS

All day.  12-17 miles. Probably at least 2000 ft of ascent, maybe 3000+ ft.  Several steep climbs.  Terrain may well be rough.  Is this your territory?

For these walks you need both fitness and stamina.  Unless you and all your party regularly cover these numbers, you will find these walks too difficult. Think carefully before you sign up for one of these, please!

  • 3 BOOTS

Normally 5-7 hours, 8-12 miles.  Mainly up to 2000 ft of ascent, a few up to 2500 ft.  Some off-path work.  Generally involve two or more steep climbs on the open hills.

Walks over moderate distance at steady pace. Distances and climbs will be less than for 4 Boots, but you and all your party still need to have done this type of walk before.

  • 2 BOOTS

Generally half day, up to 8 miles.  Mostly up to 1000 ft of ascent, a few up to 1500 ft.  Walks are unlikely to involve steep climbs, but if they do it will be taken at a gentle pace. Walks may well involve unmade footpaths.

Most reasonably fit people should cope with this level of walk. But do expect ups and downs and some rough, maybe boggy or muddy ground.

  • 1 BOOT

Walks will be at a low level and will be taken at a gentle pace and mainly on footpaths in the valley areas – e.g. river- and canal-side. Never more than half a day.

We aim to keep these walks on recognised footpaths and to have no major climbs or descents.  So, anyone should be able to participate.
