From CRiC, we wend our way through the town before beginning our ascent to our first objective, the ancient Iron Age fort of Crug Hywel, from which the town’s name is derived. It is a gradual but constant ascent through lovely woodland until we reach open country, with spectacular views of the Usk valley. There is still a little more climbing to do before we contour the hillside until we reach the cliffs of the Darren and then descend to meet the Beacons Way for a while. There is a further descent along the Cwm Gu Brook and, after carefully crossing the busy A40, we enter the Glanusk Estate. Passing through the Estate – purchased in the 19thC by Joseph Bailey, one of the Ironmasters – we join the Mon and Brec Canal, completed in the early 19thC. It is then a lovely walk along the towpath until we reach Llangattock and cross back to Crickhowell.
