This striking walk allows visitors to explore the reminders of once-thriving industry and the unique landscape around Llangattock. A steady ascent through the Craig y Cilau National Nature Reserve and across Waun Ddu, a raised bog and SSSI, to the bleak limestone karst moorland atop Mynydd Llangatwg. We get a glimpse of the Witches Pool; legend has it the site of a Dark Ages battle. Then along the top of the escarpment to the mysterious Lonely Shepherd via Twr Pen-cyrn. Stunning views of the central Beacons and Black Mountains if visibility is good - a brooding sense of ancient menace and a test of navigation if poor. The return takes us through farmland and then along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, passing a magnificent Giant Sequoia tree to the evocatively restored limekilns at Llangattock wharf. Walk leaves Ty Neuadd at 9:30am.

DIRECTIONS TO START

From CRiC take the A40 towards Brecon, turn left by the Shell petrol station and go over the river bridge. Turn left and immediately right into Llangattock village. Continue up the hill to a right hand fork, signposted Beaufort. Over the canal bridge and up the hill. Neuadd Cottages are on your left with a sign outside.
