Starting at Nantyglo round towers, probably the last defensive refuges to be built in Britain, we walk gradually up to the seldom visited summit of Mynydd Carn-y-cefn, passing West Monmouthshire golf course. We continue south, high above the Ebbw Fach valley past Blaina and towards Abertillery. We then turn northwards over Cefn yr Arail with views westwards to Ebbw Vale before returning to Nantyglo. Little remains of the Nantyglo ironworks which was once one of the most important iron producing centres in the world. We pass grassed-over slag heaps and visible traces of former industry and mining.
