This is a lovely walk with two steep ascents over two beautiful hills at the south-eastern edge of the Black Mountains. On a clear day, there are great views of the Sugar Loaf, Black Mountains and the Usk valley. Initially we ascend to the top of Bryn Arw and walk southwards along its top. We drop down, cross the main valley and skirt around the western slopes of the Skirrid. We then join the Beacons Way which we follow up and over the Skirrid and for most of the way back to the start, finally leaving it to drop down past Strawberry Cottage and back to Stanton.
DIRECTIONS TO START
Allow at least 45 minutes from CRiC. From the front of CRiC, take A40 to Abergavenny. Continue on A40 through town to T- junction with traffic-lights, (at Esso garage just past Morrisons). Turn left (Hereford Road) and after 2 miles at another T- junction, turn left onto A465. After 1.8 miles, turn left into Llanvihangel Crucorney. Pass the Skirrid Inn and turn immediately left.
At foot of hill, bear left for Llanthony and follow road for 1.4 miles past Stanton and the walkers’ car park is on your left about 50 yds past the Queen’s Head (not the pub car park on your right.
