Explore the area between the Honddu and the Grwyne Fawr and visit a Wood of Stones (with trees!) and a 2000 year old hill fort with great views and a dash of Strawberry on the way! A little bit of a climb to the hill fort, but otherwise easy walking. We set off along the Honddu to Strawberry Cottage before heading west over the lower reaches of the shoulder of Bryn Arw, then through Coed-y-Cerrig (Wood of Stones), a National Nature Reserve, followed by the climb up to Y Gaer, the hill fort. We return down the lane to our start point.
DIRECTIONS TO START
Allow at least 45 minutes from CRiC. From the front of CRiC, take A40 to Abergavenny. Continue on A40 through town to T- junction with traffic-lights, (at Esso garage just past Morrisons). Turn left (Hereford Road) and after 2 miles at another T- junction, turn left onto A465. After 1.8 miles, turn left into Llanvihangel Crucorney. Pass the Skirrid Inn and turn immediately left.
At foot of hill, bear left for Llanthony and follow road for 1.4 miles past Stanton to the Queen’s Head pub. Turn left up a steep narrow lane and the car park is about 500 yds up on the right.
