Leaving Pengenffordd we contour round and ascend Rhiw Constab and walk south east along the ridge to Waun Fach the highest top in the Black Mountains. We retrace our steps for about a mile and descend Y Grib, the Dragon's Back and explore Castell Dinas, a strategically placed former iron age hillfort and Norman outpost. Then it's a steep descent through fields to the car park and pub.
From the front of CRiC, take A40 towards Brecon. After 1½ miles, turn right onto A479 and continue through Tretower and Cwmdu for 6¾ miles towards Talgarth. The Dinas Castle Inn is nearly at the top of the long hill on the right with car-parks on both sides of the road. Use the car park by the pub. There is a £2 cash payment. Please bring the correct change.
