William Gibb - Llanthony Valley, A Mecca for Artists - Sunday 9 March 19:30-21:30 - Bear Hotel

£7.00

EVENT DETAILS

The Llanthony Valley and particularly Capel y Ffin have always attracted artists. In the 1920’s Capel-y-Ffin had been home to two of Britain’s most significant twentieth century artists – Eric Gill and David Jones. The following decade, Eric Ravilious also stayed in Capel-y-Ffin and whilst there, he explored the valley and painted some delightful views which would later be shown in his London Exhibition.

In the early February of 1938 Ravilious wrote: ‘It is rather boisterous weather but improving a little. The skies are superb but the hills so massive it is difficult to leave room for them on the paper.’

During this period Ravilious was also working as an illustrator, engraver and designer and the talk tonight will explore the whole range of his visual output at this time.

NB If you would like to experience this inspiring landscape then check out Walk 13 on Sunday 9th March.
